They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily, they say, Who shall see them? They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inwards thoughts of every one of them, and the heart, is deep (Psalm 64:5 – 6).
They say, let us roam the earth and bring vengeance: let us kill and steal and destroy the works of God. But who art thou, O LORD, that will not see this evil? Will thou hide thy face from the destruction and desolation of them that glory in their evil? Who art thou, O LORD, who stood upon the heavens in righteousness ? In righteousness, thou laid down the foundation of the earth. Thou have commanded the waters to not go unto the land, did they not listen to thee? Thou stretch out the heavens like a curtain, and yet they remain. But they will not hear thy voice. Instead they walk upon this earth destroying the works of the LORD. O LORD my God, my days have seen violence. Hates has eaten up the hearts of the wicked. They rejoice in the rotten things. In every evil, they delight themselves: and to the good things, they say, Depart from us; our desires are not for good but for evil; we lament not after our wickedness and we stir up our hearts to do more evil; our ways are not after the things of God. They say, Who art God that we shall fear him and run after his ways? Is he our maker that we should listen to him and who is the master of our lives? But thou, O LORD God, have seen the hearts of evil: do they not find shame in their ways?
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD (Jeremiah 6:15).
They are inventors of evil things, stirring up muddy water as they go. They are marked by desolation: everywhere they go there is trouble. But thou art high above, and I have look up and see thy mercy and beg thee to redeem my heart and restore my soul that I may walk in thy everlasting ways. O LORD, my glory, who shall behold the goodness of God? Who shall glory in his ways and feast from the hand of righteousness? Thou have called us to a better hope and to endure in thy mercies. Yet man will not cry out for thy mercy. Will they not repent from their sins and turn away from their wickedness? My God, the dust of this earth has become more precious than the hearts of men; who can profit from their evil? Will thou look and do nothing: will thy tears fall upon this ground in vain? My God, why have thou made me to see these things, and to know good and evil? For the good is scarce, like a water in dry land. And evil roam throughout the land. Everywhere has become a place of desolation; who can profit among them? Yet they rejoice. They marvel at their destruction. They say, We will rise up early and do wickedness, and hide ourselves that God shall not see. But thou have eyes and thou will see. Hear me, O great One, who sees all things and knows all things. Be just in your judgment and give every man his reward. Let not violence rejoice without her reward. For who shall run and hide, lest my God will not see. They have become foolish and call it wisdom. Shall wisdom fight after God? Shall it destroy the works of God? Shall not thy vengeance come upon them? O LORD, thou art righteous in thy judgment. Thou will reward every man according to his works. Surely, the wicked shall hear of thy name and their evil shall not go unpunished. The works of evil shall cease; for all vain things must come to an end.
